If a person needs hydration that badly, I've been advised that it's better to drink shiurim proactively than to get to the point where you'll need an IV. Putting needles in your body unnecessarily is really halachically questionable. It's like injuring yourself and also putting you at risk (albeit small) for infection. Torah does not want us harming ourselves. During delicate stages of pregnancy, post birth, and times of medical need most rabbis will tell you to go ahead with shiurim from the beginning of the fast to avoid needing an IV.

Ha! Tell that to my hospital who gives me IV for every birth.

Because if you faint or need fluids when things are going badly - opening a port and finding a vein is way harder. It's standard in our hospitals when you are admitted to any ward to get an iv port

I could do with an IV right about now. 6.45 here and feeling pretty sick. 3.5 hours to go! Ugh I'm not sure how I'll cope 😩

Pretty much this. During a hemorrhage or another emergency- need for a crash section or whatever, it’s very hard to get IV then. Much easier to get it with normal fluid status. I had a deal with my OB to get an IV lock, so they had the access just in case, but they didn’t use it if it wasn’t needed.

Oh man! My last baby I was 2 weeks post csection on Yom Kippur. That was a hard one

The 30 days is for 9 av, not yom kippur! Yom kippur is 3 days with shiurim or 7 days after a c-section.

Not sure about fast days. But when I was not allowed to eat because I might need surgery, I was on IV and I was STARVING.

Same. (Although I'm in W. Hempstead.)

Guzzling Gatorade the day before, yes.
Caffeine suppositories the day of, yes. (My OB/gyn admitted to using them to make it through fast days.)
IV drips, never.

I don't know anyone who would consider it, unless there was a medical need.

You still feel every bit as hungry. Not as thirsty. For those that black out from lack of hydration they can stay upright even if weak.

BH I've not felt one bit hungry today as of yet. I'm dehydrated for sure, have a terrible headache a and feel a urine infection coming on. So I'm assuming the IV would prevent the nasty side effects of fasting but I'm plowing through without and iyh ill be ok by tomorrow afternoon or shabbos!

Then I doubt you ever really had a terrible fast....

Grew up watching my mother throw up multiple times and not fully recover for 24 hours after and I think she would totally prefer an IV stuck in her arm all day if she had the option

So for YC it makes sense

But if she gets that sick on TB , you can be lenient and break fast

Having an IV port in is helpful for medications as well to go directly to the bloodstream.

I've been hospitalized and received an IV port and it was never connected to anything. I'd 100% rather have a port in than struggle in an emergency for them to get one in.
