Please no to both.
What is Shimeret?
Shimi is a very common boys name. You're asking her to be teased.

Have you heard Shlomtzion used? I read about Queen Alexandra Shlomtzion but it seemed like a very heavy name....

Salome is kind of interesting..I have to sit with that to see if it sound pretty to me.

In Israel it's unusual but definitely used.
I think this is your best bet. I think it's a beautiful, regal sounding name. And a beautiful meaning.

Sandy (instead of Alexandra).

Mazal (the mem from Shimon, and the zayin from Zeev) - far-fetched?

What name will you use to actually call her on a daily basis - the Hebrew one or the English one?

Can you give the name Nechama - as a nechama/comfort for the person who was niftar?
Not really named after, but it will be in their honour, and serve as a reminder.

I am going to put another vote for please don't name shimmel! It is so unfair to your daughter.
I know a Shima and even though it's not common it is a nicer name. if you will go with any shimon related names I would use that.
Shimona can be fine but to me it sounds awkward.

I know so many Elianas and never heard someone frum use it only as an English name and not their Hebrew name. It is, itself, a Hebrew name so using it only for English is odd. The meaning is also so similar to Shimon, and more popular. If you wanted that as her name, just use it instead of Shimon imo.

Also, consider that in future generations, if you use an English name that one would think is Hebrew, and someone was researching her, they might assume her Jewish name was Eliana and not look further.

I probably would do above, but if you're dead set on some other other name that sounds like Shimon, I think Simona is prettier than Shimona.

Sharon - several letters in common to Shimon.
Dina (Shimon saved Dina from Shechem).
Leah - mother of Shimon.
Ziva.

Maybe change tacks here. Someone suggested Nechama. What about something like
Nechama Shlomit or Nechama Shima or even Nechama Shaina?
You won’t be torturing the life out of your child and you have reference to your grandfather.

And then on the other hand (because I have the same circumstance- except that my mother isn’t pressuring me), I have two grandfathers with the same name to name after and I am IYH having a girl the same time as you. I will be naming after a different relative, because it is not our minhag to name a girl after a man. This is also likely my last baby, and I just hope that my kids might do those grandfathers the honor of naming after them.

There is actually a female entertainer named Shimi. Apparently her given name is Shimrit.

Please don’t name your daughter after a man.
You can choose a nice female name that has meaning but it’s really unfair to your daughter that you are trying to use a male name.
If Hashem wanted you to have a boy so you can use the name then he would have given you a boy.
But He wants you to have a girl so now you must use a girl’s name.
Was your grandfather a happy person? If so, you can name your daughter Aliza.
Was he a loving type? Name her Liba.
Did he promote peace? Use Shulamis or Shalva
Did you love him? Ahuva.
Is your family in need of comfort from his passing? Nechama
Another interesting name is Avigail. I think it means -my father’s joy.

Or do you have a female name in your family that you like or that you want to name after? Then use it.

But you cannot burden your daughter with having to go through life being named after a man.
Even if that’s what your mother wants…
Explain to her that the next generation will use the name. And if Hashem really wants, another baby boy will be born soon but it’s not your daughters problem right now.

I like the Aramaic סימא meaning but I dont think it has any connection with Shimon...

We have the name Zimmel in the family which we were told can be Shmuel or Shimon (and also Levi or Binyomiin)
We use Shmuel cause phonetically is more correct as zayin and shin are interchangeable. Interestingly we found out a few years later that the Zimmel we named after was probably named for Simon.

You thought shimmel was common?? How many people do you know with this name?
This is not a name people use. I know many different types names including Yiddish names and never heard anyone being called by this name. Please don’t.
