We did it on Chol Hamoed this year. About 10 years ago we did it on Hoshana Rabba.

Otherwise, we try to do it before Yom Kippur most years. Most of the time we have had the habit of doing Tashlich and Kapporas one immediately after another, mostly for convenience.

And because I'm always hoping dh will take us to the water, I end up doing the same, by the kitchen sink today.

One year it rained a lot so we went on chol hamoed. Since then we go officially on chol hamoed. Dh said he read somewhere that you can go till Chanukah.
