I’m having trouble understanding how chava means life or mother of all life when the root is not the same? Can someone explain to me the meaning of the name Chava in a way that’s understandable to the layman?

my unsatisfactory answer is - because it says so.

Literal translation of chava means "to breathe".

Name is known as mother of mankind.

If you're comparing Chava and Chaya, both names, both meanings, symbolize life.

Vavs and yuds were shifted in and swapped in Semitic languages, so the shoresh would mean the same thing whether there was a yud or vav.

: Heb. This coincides with the expression of חַיָה, living, because she gives life to her offspring, as you say, (Ecc. 2:22):“For what does a man have (הֹוֶה) ?” with the expression“being” (הֹוֶה) . [I.e., The “vav” and the “yud” are interchangeable.]
Rashi on this posuk,
