The SNOO bassinet. To buy or not to buy??!

I’m expecting my 5th iyH. Has anyone used the snoo and been happy or disappointed with it???

Someone is selling it second hand and I need to get back to her ASAP if I’ll buy it!
Any insights are helpful!! ty!

I dont have it but am tempted to get it. I have a bunch of friends who got one, they have all been really really happy with it.

From a developmental perspective, no. It's basically a straight jacket. The extended sleep can be detrimental to breastfeeding relationship and also baby needs those calories, they wake for a reason.

I also got it for my fifth and it was a miracle.... Until I started to train him to sleep through the night. All my kids slept through the night at around 9 months old. This one is already almost 2 and still wakes up multiple times a night. I blame the snoo that never taught him how to self soothe at a very critical developmental stage.

I say yes. If you want to wake up to feed you can do it with a Snoo regardless. It gives peace of mind to parents who otherwise would suffer from sleep deprivation or who have PPD. I really love the founder Harvey Karp’s approach to babies (he is Jewish btw!)

I don’t think the Snoo completely makes babies fall asleep all through the night, rather extended periods. They still need to be fed and changed and it’s not a 100% type of thing. I also heard it helps with sleep training. I like that the Snoo can be linked with an app so you can see how many hours your baby slept.

What do you do on shabbos? Can it run Friday night? Shabbos day naps without buttons and an app?

I was gifted one (really generous of the gifter, I know!) so I feel that my opinion of the Snoo is unbiased since I personally did not spend anything on it. My baby hated being swaddled so tightly, and although I used the rocking feature for a few weeks to try to soothe her, she hated it and would just scream louder the faster it rocked. I ended up using a looser swaddle for my baby, and stopped using the rocking feature altogether, so it simply became a standard, albeit beautiful bassinet. I gave it away when my baby outgrew it and bought a cheap bassinet for my next baby, and he is the first of my children to sleep through the night.

Developmental specialists disagree with you. There is a lot of fearmongering around the snoo but it is unfounded and based on myths. A hungry baby will wake up despite the snoo, and newborn babies thrive when swaddled.

It’s the same as swaddling a baby. It’s just a swaddle that clips into the bassinet. It’s not recommended to swaddle past the newborn stage but it’s great for those first months.

I found that it helped a lot for naps. Previously she would only nap while held.

Nighttime sleep was still a challenge. But I think the SNOO was helpful.

I would recommend.

We left it on the whole Shabbos but we had to run when she cried to make sure it didn’t get to the red level. Ask your LOR.

Ps this was 5 years ago I don’t know if anything has changed.

Used for both my kids. Don't know why more people don't get it. It makes such a difference. Really trained them to sleep better in such a gentle way. And yes they still wake up on their hungry. It just puts them back to sleep once they're full. Also great for those I need to run to the bathroom moments with your newborn. And the teething for older babies. And everything in between.

The only con is the price tag. Otherwise I think everyone should get it. But obviously $1,500 isn't for everyone.

I feel like this is really individual so it’s kind of an expensive experiment.
Personally my newborns always knew the difference between being rocked in something and being held. I always optimistically got those baby bouncers and never ended up using them. So I wouldn’t put much stock in the snoo either. But I’m sure some people find it helpful.

I absolutely love it.

I’ve had the hardest babies and saved up for a long while to be able to afford it. It was worth every dollar.

This baby was my first to give me nice stretches at night. I was a human for a change. And the babies are not caged in at all.

She’s older now and has zero sleep issues. She transitioned to a crib then bed without any issues.

Regarding shabbos, I’d zip in an empty swaddle so it went all shabbos. Baby wore a different swaddle so it didn’t shut off when I took her out. Does that make sense?

I say go for it!

Someone gave one as a gift to my grandchild. Said child was completely disinterested in the motion and they simply used it as a regular bassinet. I've heard that others loved it, but to me it seems like a very big expenditure for about 6 weeks.

So it seems like it’s worth trying it then. I’m not buying it new, getting one second hand that is much cheaper so hopefully I can resell
