My debit card wasn't working. Last time this happened it was because it was locked for suspected fraud (although I was not alerted) so I called.
They told me that the whole bank goes offline for an hour every night and nothing will go through. They told me that it can happen between 1 and 6 am and there is no way to know except by seeing that things aren't going through.
Is this normal? Does that happen with every bank?

I don't know about banks, but I'm guessing they have databases on mainframes and it's normal to have daily processing where the databases aren't available, so you cannot access the systems during that time.
