On the cps thread it mentioned about giving fish sticks for supper. My kids are picky and there's only so many options they'll eat!!

Lol dont take everything to heart.

My kids eat plenty of fish sticks, pizza, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, pasta for dinner and are just fine.

It's the whole package of none of the kids needs being met. Easy, unhealthy dinners are not alone incriminating.

You're fine. Better to feed your kids with something not "ideal" then have them eat nothing.

I assume you still try to give them healthier foods on occasion, but you just prioritize fish sticks since that’s something that you know that they’ll eat.

The issue with the other mother sounds like in addition to all the dysfunction of the home she doesn’t even try for fresh and healthy options.

My parents didn’t mind if we had junk food for dinner most nights. But twice a week my mother would make a regular supper and we had to eat it. If we didn’t like it, she wouldn’t make it again for a while. The idea was to try to get us to like other foods.

It's really what the totality of the diet is.

I would say that a diet for children which consists solely of processed foods is probably not healthy for them - or for anyone.

There are ways to make kid friendly foods that are healthier and relatively easy to prepare with a minimum of thinking ahead.

If you use real fish with real breadcrumbs you can freeze them. If you make chicken "fingers" with real chicken the same since most chicken nuggets that are processed commercially are dregs of chicken and very high in salt and other chemicals.

Most kids like soup - even with commercial soups there are healthier versions which are lower in sodium and sugar for example.

Back when I had 2 toddlers and a baby I served a lot of fish sticks and nuggets now I cook at least 4-5 suppers a week and my baby is growing up with a much bigger variety of food than my other kids had.

Na. It's the whole package.
It's not the healthiest option. But what can you do? Continue feeding your kids. Your doing OK.

I’m delighted when my kids eat fish sticks. I don’t buy this whole argument about processed food. I cook pretty healthy food but I can’t make my kids eat it

There's maybe a hierarchy & it depends on priorities, plus whats eaten with it.
Fish sticks are at least, fish.

Is it served with vegetables? Even if "instant" baby carrots & cut up cucs?

Hot dogs however contain low quality meat & nitrates. Theres something to be said also for food combining, like hot dogs are beneficial to serve with the traditional beans, because then you're adding loads of fiber to the not so great hot dogs.

Pizza can be a nice option too, but can it be topped with veg, a pareve "meat", or served with hard boiled eggs for protein? A cup of milk?

I don't see the problem with fish sticks. Protein, carbs and some fat, those are all things that children need.

For those that say that its overly processed - everything we eat today is processed.

Unless you're grinding your own flour and laying your own eggs and growing and shechting your own chickens, your food is processed. Everything.

Should we all eat healthier? Yeah we should. But you're well within normal range even if you serve them fish sticks and spaghetti every night.

eggs, chicken, meat, fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, legumes, tubers are not processed. They may be contaminated with pesticide, micro plastics, hormones, heavy metals etc. But they are not processed. Whole grains like rice, kasha, millet and quinoa are not processed.

Then there's minimally processed like lentil pasta for example, or frozen veggie burgers made from vegetables, eggs and a whole grain flour. then there's ultra processed like commercial chicken nuggets, wacky mac and frozen French fries and yes, fish sticks. Not saying it's the end of the world, but saying it's all the same is just not true.

It’s fine here and there. Most of us have issues with kids not loving healthy meals, but there are ways to sneak healthy foods into their diets which they will like and won’t even realize are healthy… smoothies with lots of fruits, veggies baked into muffins, salad with good dressing, and multi vitamins help too.
