What is the reason for speaking in the third person to small children?
For example a mother says to her son Shimmy, "Mommy is making Shimmy a sandwich."

Lack of understanding pronouns. If the child doesn't understand you can mean me or them depending on who you are talking to, it can be easier to just use their name to make sure they understand.

I saw a post on IG by a speech therapist encouraging it.

From what age and until what age do you do this? How do they learn pronouns if you don't use them?

I use it when they are not in good moods because it’s easier for them to process. Probably through 4 years old around.

I see many posts on imamother of examples of what to say in different scenarios that are written in third person even for elementary school kids. Does anyone speak in third person to their kids in lower elementary who definitely understand pronouns, and if so why?

For my lower elementary kids, I generally use pronouns
I will sometimes talk about myself in third person to them, and it’s generally an expression of TLC

My parents always spoke in third person about themselves when we were younger.
Most of my siblings tend to talk to our parents in third person as a sign of respect.

I use it sometimes in an attempt to be less confrontational.
"Don't speak to me that way!" Vs. "It's not nice to speak to your mommy that way"

Some do it as a way of showing respect when speaking about parents.
For very young it’s to help with language since pronouns are hard
