I know Kayla is a Jewish name, but why? No one I've asked, including Kaylas and mothers of Kaylas, could tell me what it means or where it comes from. Anyone have some insight?

It is from the shoresh kelilah, which means a crown.
It is like the yiddish version of Atara

Why yiddish? I thought crown in yiddish, as a name, was kreindel?

Well its not hebrew. Crown in hebrew is keter.

It’s a different kind of crown. It refers to a wreath of laurels, afaik. Not a golden crown.

I've researched the name meaning/origin, but the results look unreliable, are not consistent, and the only Jewish explanations are a stretch (ex. comes from Kelilah - why would you drop a middle syllable of a name?)

Are you my other sister?!?!
My sister is named Kayla and that's what my dad said too - related to the name of Hashem. We say "Kel", not E-L, as in "Kel Shakki"
(FYI: People used to not give the name Ella because it was a female name of Hashem but it became very popular now.)
AFAIK, it's not a shortened form of Kelila. Kelilah is a hebrew name; Kayla is yiddish.
