What are the proportions for making plain white rice in the oven?
I usually make my oven rice with margarine and onion soup mix but I want to make it plain this time.
Thanks!

I never made rice in the oven before, but I am guessing you could prob just eliminate the soup mix and use the same amount of water:rice ratio.
just curious - how DO you make oven rice???

I ended up finding this recipe online:
1 cup rice
2 1/4 cups water
2 T margarine
1 tsp salt
Bake covered at 350 for an hour
I like making rice in the oven SO much better than on the stove! Its easier and the texture comes out perfect. Usually I do:
1 cup rice
2 1/2 cups water
4 T margarine
onion soup mix (bit less than a packet)
Its delicious!

Use twice the amount of water as rice (e.g., one cup of rice and two cups of water). Pour rice and water into a pan, cover well. Bake at 350 for one hour. Comes out perfect every time!

Four tablespoons of margarine? That sounds like a lot of fat for a cup of rice. I usually use a teaspoon or a little less of butter per cup of rice. Or was that a typo and you meant teaspoon?
I'm a rice junkie over here. I make it practically ever week.

Nope, no typo! I know its really unhealthy
When I want to be healthy I make brown rice with mushroom, onions and spices - no fat.

If you eat a lot of rice, consider buying a rice cooker. Nothing easier, simpler and lazier, put in rice, water, oil, salt, push the button and that's it!

Does a rice cooker do anything else? I make a ton of rice, but don't know if I want a single-purpose appliance. Also, does it work for all kinds of rice -- I make lots of different kinds.

I have only used my rice cooker for rice but I have made all types sushi white and brown plus mine came with a recipe book. It was a cheap rice cooker from target I had bought to just make sushi rice but I love it so much I use it all the time.

Mine has a steamer basket. So I use it to steam won tons. I guess it would work with steaming vegetables as well.

I've used oil instead of margarine in oven rice, no problem.
