I want to name a child after a close relative, but he had no Jewish name. Is there a name that sounds like, or has a similar meaning to, the English name Charlie/Charles?

(Did research, the name means something like "free man" or "noble man.")

Yechezkel commonly goes with Charles. Also Betzalel (Tzali) with Charlie.

This is so strange, I had no clue it's common. I have an uncle Charles/Yechezkel Moshe. He's in his 70s. Do you know where the connection comes from?

Probably from the fact that the nickname "Chatzkel" for Yechezkel bears a superficial spelling resemblance to "Charles." At a certain point in history, it was common for children to be given an English name that started with the same letter as their Hebrew name or the Hebrew name of the person they were being named for. There is no connection as far as the meanings of the names, and Charles is in no way the English name for Yechezkel the way Elizabeth is the English form of Elisheva. The English form of Yechezkel is Ezekiel.

I know someone who used a name that represented the person who was not Jewish but a close relative (they are geirim) like- Aryeh (noble person-stands up for values) simcha (someone who was generally happy)..ahuva (a beloved person who loved people) etc...
That's what I would do!

Chaim on the other hand is of similar root to Charles. Charles comes from Karl which means man in old German. Chaim is Chai which means living things AKA man.

A bit far fetched, but you could use David. Because Charles and David are both Kings!

Ask a rav, they often know about names and these kinds of things.

What about Chanan or Adin? I feel like the meanings are roughly similar?

Charles is often Chiel for Ashkenazim and Chalom for Sephardim.
