This is one I have but your best bet is to get fitted. Everyone's body is different.

Even if you get fitted professionally, double check your fit:

  • Make sure you're putting your bra on right. The bra cup is supposed to contain the entire breast, including the side (which some consider "armpit fat"). Lean forward and "scoop" yourself in.

  • The backwards band test: the band should fit snugly when worn normally or worn backwards. A snug band is where the support comes from. If the bra band feels snug when worn normally but loose when worn backward, the tightness is coming from the cups, and you probably need to size up in the cup and down in the band.

  • Is the gore (center) sitting against your chest? There are various reasons for a floating gore, too much for me to get into in this one post, but do your research. Point is, it's supposed to be sitting on your chest and not pushed forward, and the bra is supposed to lift and separate your breasts, not smush them together.

  • Do the cups feel like they're squeezing? A bra should support, not compress. It should be big enough to contain your whole breast, including the sides as mentioned before. If it's too big, it will gape or wrinkle. (It's normal for there to be a little gaping in a properly fitted bra if you lift your arms. Also, it's okay for one cup to be too big. Most women are at least slightly asymmetrical, and the bra should fit the bigger side.)

  • Do you feel that your breasts are migrating to the sides? This can be caused by several different issues, but most commonly, it's the wrong style bra for you and you need one with more side support.
