I'm looking for a good recipe for a babka (yeast cake). [Like the type your Bubby would've made.]

Chocolate Babka From kitchen confidental
fattening as can be but heaven! make sure you cook it a bit more than it says.
Dough
7 cups flour+ 1 cup if necessary
4 1/2 tablespoons instant yeast/rapid rise
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla sugar
1 1/2 cups margarine, melted
1 3/4 water (I didnt have instant yeast so I took a little water off and proofed the yeast with it)
2 eggs
2 yolks
2 tsp salt

In large bowl combine, flour, yeast, sugar, vanilla sugar, margarine, water eggs, yolks, salt. Turn out on floured board and knead for 5 min, adding 1 cup flour if necessary. Allow to rise covered with plastic wrap for 1 1/2 hours.

Chocolate filling
1 cup margarine, melted
1 box instant chocolate pudding
1 egg
1/2 cup water
2 cups sugar
1 cup coca

combine set aside

crumb topping
1/2 stick margarine
1 cup flour
3/4 cup sugar

crumble margarine with flour and sugar with fingertips

spray 4 (10 inch) loaf pans with cooking spray
divide dough into 8 pieces, roll out each piece to 1/8 inch thick rectangle the length of the loaf pan, spread filling within a 1 inch border around, and roll from long side like a jelly roll. twist two rolls together and place a twist in each pan. Using all the crumbs sprinkle 1/4 of the crumbs on each loaf. Allow to rise for 30 min. Bake for 30 min at 350 (prob will need much more otherwise they fall) when cool enough to handle remove from pans let cool on wire rack

I am actually not a good baker at all, something about measuring and precision that I just cant get right, when I got the new cookbook I showed dh the pictures of the babka and he basically guffawed and said you cant do that, AND SO I DID and they were the best da@@ed babkas ever!

hey, why don't you just send some over and save me the work! they look heavenly!

shoy, do you think I can substitute oil for the marg. I don't really use it anymore. (I was hoping a bubby's recipe wouldn't have marg., just the simple stuff like flour, oil, eggs...)

I don't have a special recipe, (I actually came here to look) but instead of the combination (sticky?) filling in shoy's recipe, I just spread a small amt of oil on the rolled-out dough and then sprinkle cocoa and sugar . It would be easier to roll up, I think.

Anyway, that's my Bubby's trick.

I think I need to stop reading this at this hour-- I'm getting ideas, and I just posted on the weight loss thread about not eating late at night!
