One of our toilets overflowed today. Mad The mess in the bathroom is cleaned up and disinfected, and the toilet will hopefully be fixed tomorrow, but the problem is that a smallish portion of the carpeting in the adjoining room is soaking wet. Has anyone successfully dried out/ disinfected carpeting before? Do I need to call a professional? Yuck!

First thing to do is dry the carpets. Put a couple of fans blowing directly on it 24/7 till it's totally dry. You don't want mold growing under there. I don't know about disinfecting, but wouldn't regular carpet cleaner do the job?

You can rent deep cleaning/steaming machines with special cleanser at most grocery stores and they usually work to clean and remove moisture. If the carpet is still wet, try a wet/dry vac.

do you have a padded layer under the carpet? that is usually where the mold starts growing b/c it doesn't dry with carpet on top. the best bet is to use the wet vac on your carpet to extract the water, then put a blower under the carpet on top of the pad until it dries.
if it doesn't dry quickly boy will it stink! we learned the hard way... but a proffesional carpet cleaner really fixed it for us.
