What do you do about the smell of frying latkes in oil that adheres rapidly and readily to your shaitel?Do I have no choice but to make a u turn and take it back to be rewashed just days after it was set?

Um, at the risk of stating the obvious, can you just not wear your sheitel while they are frying? And change back into it afterwards, if you are so inclined?

I second that. When I was first married, my mil told me that the guy she bought her shaitels from told her NEVER to cook with a shaitel on, and I really try not to. It definitely cuts down on the dirt and grime.

The only way to get the smell out is to wash it...

what about a rain bonnet or other protection....or get yourself a synthetic cooking Sheital that you can easily wash.

I say strip it off ... it might only smell good while you're frying - after it'll smell like stale oil ... Puke

ok, same as all the ladies suggested. But if you do want to or you already have made them, the only suggestion I can come up with is to spritz it with a little perfume, it may help.
