What fresh fruit can I use to top a custard fruit pie that is not horribly expensive in the winter?

Depends on where you are... bananas and strawberries are fairly cheap here in Israel...

I'm in the NJ, USA.

Bananas are not real expensive but I never thought of putting them in a tart.

You've never heard of banana cream pie?

Bananas, kiwi, clementine segments... I have no idea what is in season there...

Simple
Bake a pastry pie dough in a tart pan or pie pan - weigh it down so it does not puff - with beans or rice.
Paint with egg and bake a drop longer until the egg sets
Fill with custard.
I used to use Baker's choice Custard. but now I've discovered Baker's Choice Napoleon Creme. Its a bit more work to make but tastes much much better.
Top with fruit (strawberries, kiwi, peaches, blueberries, or canned fruit)
Paint with melted apricot jam
and viole - it looks beautiful and tastes yummy.

thanks for the suggestions. I ended up using kiwi, canned peaches and mandarin oranges and red grapes. It came out so nice.

Yesha - I decided not to use the bananas because I was making it in advance and did not want the bananas to turn brown.
