Keep in mind that if he decided that college is not for him, trade school is a viable option. Union workers like electricians and plumbers make serious money!
If he's one of those kids who likes to take things apart and put them back together, he could be a great electrician.
I suggest finding the most stable and sustainable job possible, with the highest pay. Wires and pipes will always be breaking and need fixing.
I suggested a friend of mine go into the medical field, because people are always getting sick. She said "Ew, I don't do sick people." I said how about a lab tech? and she said "Ugh, I don't do bodily fluids." Finally we settled on an EEG technician. She's worked her way up in a very big hospital, and is now head of the department.
