My middle name is Esther, so I couldn’t name a child that.

I was both born in Adar (though not on Purim) and named for a relative named Esther.

This is so interesting to read. I actually named my daughter Esther (as a middle name) specifically because I’m so inspired by Queen Esther!! She was a woman before her time; a woman who gave up so much to help her people, and a woman who was so brave and independent. And beautiful to boot Very Happy

I have an Esther named after my grandmother. I would totally name after Esther Hamalka if I had a baby on Purim and didn't already have an Esther.

Esther Hamalka was a heroine! Most (or all) biblical figures had difficult lives.

Esther had a difficult (some might even say ultimately tragic) life, but I think she had more agency. She was not just a suffering tzaddekes - she risked her life and accomplished something incredible.

I think that’s different than the more “passive” women who also had horrible things happen to them, like Dina or Tamar (daughter of David). I’m not judging if they were righteous or not, but it just feels different to me.
