handwashing is recommended for dinnerware with gold or platinum trim--unless you don't mind that the trim wears off prematurely. Machine washing is on a very small scale a little bit like power-washing the facade of a building: you are bombarding the surface with very powerful jets of water, the purpose of which is to loosen and remove whatever is on the surface.
