What exactly does this mean? 6 hours straight? 12 hours straight?

I say it means sleeping enough that you felt like you had a nights sleep (not a full night ssleep tho) and not three 2 hr naps.

There is no definition. I think most ppl would tell you it means enough to feel a little rested, which in my opinion would be at least a good 5 hr stretch. (although of course anything longer would be awesome!)

I am finding it interesting to hear how much people's definition's of "through the night" differ. When I say that, I mean from bedtime to morning wake-up (about 11-12 hrs. for a baby). This is not something I'd expect very early on and I'm always surprised when I hear people say that their baby started sleeping through the night at 2 or 3 mos. Now I realize that they might mean something different from what I'm thinking!

Personally, I would not define it based on how much sleep I'm getting, since I've had babies who slept 6 hrs. and then woke up to eat every 3 hrs. For example, slept from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., but then also woke up at 4 a.m. - so I still got woken up twice a night.

I asked the pediatrician once and he told me that this meant for at least a 5 hour stretch during the night.

I've heard 5 hours also but when I say it with my kids I mean bed to morning, about 11/12 hours. (And Ima'la, even by this definition my first was sleeping through from 7 weeks Wink They keep getter later after him though!)
