is v8 kosher? does it have a hechsher?

This is an ask your LOR question, because some (not fringe) rabbonim say it's fine, others say it's fine for particular products. It is not a blanket unacceptable hechsher.

he does, and he's a smart man. My husband, however, works for the OU and has been to plants that have a half-moon K and they have not passed inspection and the standards of the OU and also refused to take on the OU.

I guess "aseh l'cha rav" and decide who you want to follow.

It is correct that the OU bought Half-Moon K, or at least, took over the plants but it was done on the condition that those plants go through initial inspections per the OU standards and then decide if they want to pay more money for a more vigilant hashgocha. Many have refused.

as we all know by now, there are many little things that can be a problem that are not listed on the ingredients list.

So, until you see an OU on a product, it should not be relied upon, unless you know something about a specific individual product. But this cannot be a blanket statement about the half moon K.
