How many parties are too many? Then what do I do for a gift?

So friends of ours got engaged over the summer (not frum.) They had a l'chaim right away, where dh and I gave them their engagement present.
Now we knew that they were going to have a long engagement (1 1/2 years). However we did not expect them to have another engagement party. This one is formal (at a country club).
There will also be a shower in a few months.

What do I do in terms of gifts?

Truthfully I'm annoyed with the fact that that they are having a second party and feel like they're being a bit greedy.

Nope. They're bh doing very well. They're already living together in the house that they own.

Where I grew up, brides had LOTS of parties and showers--all of the mother's friends gave luncheons and teas-- but NO ONE expected more than 1 real engagement gift (and even that could be small) I'd say either bring nothing for the otehr parties (you gave your gift and your only job now is to celebrate with the couple!)
or if it's a smaller party/shower, you can give a novel kitchen instrument or cookbook.
