it could be an ear infection, sinus infection, or maybe teething. when baby was just 1.5 years she would fall asleep on her own but then wake up screaming. I took her to the doctor and she hada sinus infection.

I would still check into the ear infection. One of my sons used to have occasional back to back ear infections, and also more than once, still had an ear infection after the initial round of antibiotics and had to be given a stronger medication to clear it up.
I think that an ear infection or teething is probably the most likely scenario, but it's also possible that your child is afraid of something. One of my children always hated the dark from the time that she was very young and slept better with a nightlight.
Another thing that may sound crazy, is to check her to see if she has a splinter or maybe a hair wrapped around one of her digits. Once my ds was very cranky and he ended up having a large splinter in his leg, and another time my dd was cranky and I took her to the Dr. positive that she had an ear infection and she had a hair wrapped tightly around one of her toes.

Are her cheeks red? My DS is about the same age. I'd say welcome to molars
