My toddler has a terrible cough while he is sleeping (both in his bed at night and during naptime at school). He is fine the rest of the time. No runny nose. Doesn't seem sick.
Ideas?

Try raising the head of the bed with extra pillows or just under the mattress and see if it helps.

Sounds like a post nasal drip that is causing the cough. My mom always used Benadryl before bed when we had this as kids and it would dry it right up. Having him sleep elevated should also help.

The best idea - Take a large onion, or a couple of smaller ones.
Cut them in half (keep the skin on) & put them on a plate. Place the plate on the floor next to the bed or for a crib, on a chair next to the crib (so it's raised a little higher)
The room will stink of Israeli salad in the morning but I promise you, your child will not cough. It always works for me & anyone I know who's tried it.

Would this work for babies too?
