I love the name "Mina" for a girl, but can't seem to track down the origin. Also, my husband's grandfather's name was "Banis," which we believe came from "Banish," which we thank (hope) came from Benyomin. Online, it seems to indicate that Banis/Banish came from "Benedict," which doesn't make a lot of sense historically. Does anyone have any other information about these two names?
Thanks!

Mina is beautiful!
Could be that it comes from Mindel/Mindy? I'm just guessing. I'm sure I've heard of it or read it in a book before.
Just looked it up on behindthename.com

My great grandfathers name was Beinish - sorry, I have no idea where the name originates from, but my grandfather was originally from Israel.

Minna/Mina is an accepted Yiddish name, so the origin is probably German (or other Euro country). Both YeshaSettler & Ruchel are very into name origins. Perhaps ask one of them.

Beinish is probably a nickname from Binyamin and many times even go together.
And Mina is probably also a nickname from Mindel.

I had a girl in my school whose name is, Mina. As far as I know, that's her name and not a nickname. A friend of mine has a son she calls Beinish and I believe his name is Binyamon. Okay, you could see we're not that close .

I know several Minas and Beinishes. Her question was what name it is? To which I responded that they might have "originated" from a nickname, like Etty and Malya and Heny.
