I wash darks on 30, whites on 60, diapers (with no elastic) on 90.

90 will kill germs, but it will also kill elastic on fitted sheets and send clothing to an earlier grave.

Laundry soap will kill germs too and we always use it. Smile

We wash everyone's stuff together.

No, I wash my laundry in the washing machine and I wash my children in the bathtub. (OK, sorry I couldn't resist).

30C for the cloth diapers (manufacturer's instructions). Cold for everything else. Only diapers get washed in separate loads (and toilet training accidents go in there, not in the regular, mixed loads).

Same. Except I wash the baby (3 mos. old)'s clothes separately for now.

but b'h on 30 my clothing all seem ok.

thanks for your answers - I was just wondering what the normal was.
(I have been washing regular clothing on 30 and whites or towels on 90)

e1234 I would be careful about washing on 90. It is very hard on the clothing. 60 is hot enough for white IMO. 90 is for sterilizing.

U.S machines don't have that choice. It's either hot (whatever is in the dud), warm (dud+cold water) or cold.
I do underwear on hot. Towels and sheets as well.
Everything else is on cold.

I sort by colour. Of course I mix kids' stuff and ours.
We have 3-4 loads a day.
Towels (dark in one load, medium/light in another) - 60
Whites 60 (rarely on 90, it is hard on clothes)
Shirts, jeans, pants, etc - sorted according to colour (darks, pink/red/yellow, and blue/green/other) 40

I put underwear in with the bath towels so they can be washed on 60 rather than 40.
Linen 60
Tablecloths 40

I believe lice need to be washed at 60 or above to kill eggs, etc. But the real solution for lice is to comb everyday, in my experience there's no need to wash the entire house. Enough to change the pillowcases everynight.

Why do you do your linen on 60? Isn't that high?

I wash my linen on 60 also. It helps kill the dust mites.

US: Linens/towels/diapers on hot, cottons on warm, delicates on cold.

UK: Linens/towels/diapers on 60, cottons on 40, delicates/wool on 30. Never used the 95 cycle except once when I had to boil my diapers. They were starting the 'wash at 30' campaign when I left so by now I might have dared to try it Smile
