Anyone have info about how to get an American phone line? Preferably the kind that your computer doesn't need to be on to connect. I've never looked into it before so any info, price range etc would be helpful.
Thanks

We have TCS which works through our regular phone line. We have a special code for dialing US numbers. Plus- great quality! Minus- it's really expensive (182 shekel this month) and they charge in $ and give a 4 shekel to the $ exchange. Um- yeah. That has existed in what? 4 or 5 years? They offered us a free month with a 4 month trial, and I think we'll be cancelling shortly when the trial ends. I was making a few business calls where Skype quality wasn't good enough, but now I'm back to calling family, and they can listen to me yell.

we've got magicjack, but your computer needs to be on...
you can't be doing anything internet related at the time either to get decent quality...
it's not the best, but it's the cheapest out there and it suits our needs.

Same here. I can browse imamother or something while it's on, but that's about it. You can't beat the price though.

My DD has something which doesn't require a computer or DSL line at all -- it's through her regular phone service and includes unlimited incoming and outgoing US calls for around $25 per month. She dials a code for an outgoing US call and has a local US number for us to call.

I used to have a US phone line but switched to a local company's ADSL. I get better sound quality now than I did before, but calls to the US aren't local, of course so it costs more for them to call me. OTOH, my monthly fee is much less.

Vonage is so expensive...
We have a magic jack... It costs $ 40 to buy and includes the first year... after that its $ 20 a year and there are even five year deals for $ 60 or so... You get a US phone number from an area of your choice.. and you can make unlimited US phone calls to landlines AND cell phones for free! (And receive them, obviously)

That sounds like what I have, but hers is much cheaper. Could you find out the company?

It is possible the price has gone. That's what it cost when she first got which was a couple of years ago. I'll ask her when I speak to her tomorrow.

We have a company called future nine. We pay $135 for the year. It includes 3000 outgoing minutes and 3000 incoming minutes. Never had a problem with it.

I just asked her -- the price is more -- a little over $40 per month.

Phonepower for $200 for 2 years, 5,000 minutes per month for USA and Canada. They also have a Global thing for about $8 per month anywhere else in the world for 1,200 per month.
