I don't really understand the shabbat mode of these new ranges. The ones I've been looking at do not have a knob to control the oven- only a touch pad. How does one adjust the temperatures on yom tov with an electronic touch pad??? What exactly is this "shabbat mode'" for?

I need recommendations for a good brand self cleaning range with a 5th burner - one that is the most hassel free to use on yom tov. Anyone?

If you put it into shabbos mode it won't turn off automatically after 12 hours. Also it makes it cycle on and off so you can open without having to wait for the light on yom tov (because opening it won't cause it to suddenly turn on). I don't know if this is a feature with all of them, though...and I don't rely on it, personally.

But isn't there something about not opening an oven on Shabbos when it's on because you change the temperature? We have Shabbos mode & only use it for Yom Tov.

right - that's why I specified yom tov in my note. On shabbos I put the Friday night food in before shabbos starts, turn the temp up very high (450) and then turn it off completely before lighting candles. The oven stays warm enough so the food is still hot when it is time to eat.

I have a kitchenaid stove with shabbos mose and touchpad controls. On shabbos mode, each number on the touchpad corresponds to a certain temp.
Ex: 1-350, 2-375 etc. On yom tov, while in the shabbos mode, if u want to change temps, you press the number corresponding to the desired temp, but the display on the screen won't change, and the buttons will not beep while you're pressing. So , really it looks like you did nothing, but the temp will change but it may take up to 30 minutes. It should fully explain everything in the owners' manual

Try the star-k website. I know they had a few articles on this.
