I buy lettuce and check it.

Friday afternoon I made a nice fresh salad. We ate it Friday night, no problem.

Shabbos afternoon, it was crawling with bugs, and so was the head it came from. I could not have missed so many bugs in my checking; could they actually have grown in my fridge?

I found recently my lettuce was very buggy, I double checked them and checked it once again b4 putting it into the salad, it is possible you missed them.

SaraG, what type of lettuce was it? Was it hearts of Romaine, by any chance? I recently found a live green bug in it, for the very first time!

Yes, they were hearts of romaine. Foxy brand.

The bugs were the type I've never seen before - small, black, and leggy. TONS of them!

I recently found total infestation in a few packages of hearts of Romaine. Even the better brand for 3.99. I thought hearts of Romaine were supposed to be relatively clean. What's going on?

Do you not have "bug free" lettuce in America?
Maybe you should get someone to import it from Israel.

Here in England I buy the packages of Gush Katif lettuce, and have done for years. Supply was uninterrupted last year (as far as I can remember). I read somewhere, maybe Arutz Sheva, that the factories were transferred somewhere.

Yes, they moved their greenhouses. We get ours from Sderot I think. Apart from the kashrus issues, I'm also glad to support those farmers who must have lost a lot of money.

I only get that kind of lettuce Pesach time; I'm not even sure it's sold other times of the year.

Alei Katif lettuce is still sold year-round and still bears the Kfar Darom address on the label. I guess they had all those bags printed up, why waste them, even if the produce isn't coming from Kfar darom now that kfar darom is no more. (For the second time).
