Shearit, Yaakova, Atara - no to all.

Which parsha do you want a name from?

Is Atara really not an accepted name in Israel? Here in the US it's fairly common.

It's sort of naming your American daughter an Israeli name "moron". common name.

It's not that you'll never find a Yaakova or an Atara, but people will be secretly thinking, "Yaakova? Atara?Oooookay."

You will probably never find a She'erit.

I know two Ataras, both Israeli with Israeli-born parents. Why is it so weird?

is this too weird? in the parsha next week it discusses the remnants of yaakov - she'arit yaakov. we are looking for a girls name and my husband thought of she'aris or she'arit. is this too out there?

You mean haftorah, not parsha. And that's this week's hafotrah.

When I think of She'aris, the Litvishe hechsher, She'eiris yisroel, comes to mind Smile

I agree with everyone that "leftover" is not a name. How would your daughter feel with a name like that or like Yaakova, Yisraela. Pleeeeese. Can't you think of a normal Jewish girls name? Does it have to be original?

I am American living in Israel and have a daughter Atara. E/o loves the name. the Israelis just make fun how I say it, my havara - but all love the name and she happens to be the cutest kid bli ayin hara! and my yeshivish friends like it too, just think a bit less of a yeshivish name.

What's wrong with the name Atara? Atara, a crown, is a beautiful name. I know several girls/women with this name. Definitely nicer than Yakoba or Shearis.

Am I the only one that thinks Atara - p*nis related? Isn't the 'head' called atara in many cases?

Atara is a VERY popular name among Israeli chardal groups. Or at least there are many young women in their twenties with that name - I don't know if it's still as popular with the new generation of babies.

I believe the Israelis and Americans pronounce it differently.

Yaakova -- never ever heard of that, and I don't like it. I actually don't really like boys' names that are made into girls' names with the 'a' ending. I have a feeling it would be a name that would be teased.

I have to agree with all of the above. Don't give a child a name she will be mbarassed or made fun of!

which parasha is it?

Many names for this time of year. Ruchama, Nechama, BatZion,

Atara is used in Israel but not very common.

I don't believe in giving unusual names, but BTW I have a friend whose middle name is She'erah, the name of a real woman in Tanach: Divrei Hayamim 1, Perek 7, Passuk 24. This name is from the same root word as the one your DH chose and it's more grammatically correct. (Like people who name their kid Ayelet instead of Ayala - that's incorrect.)
