I have asked about this before, but I am still really unsure. I am in desperate need of a new computer and cannot decide if I should go for a mac (even if I am sooooo in love with it) so I am going to ask a bunch of questions here:

First of all how do I know what to get? I basically work on photoshop and browse the web.

Where is the best place to get it?

As this can only be serviced by apple, how often does it need fixing? does it break easily?

Does it come preloaded with any programs?

If I need programs like adobe will any computer guy be apple to install it or only apple? and will the charge me a fortune?

How hard is it to change for a pc to a mac?

What are the pros and cons of a mac?

if I will think of any more I will add it soon.
thanks in advance

Once you have an apple you will never want to go back to a PC.
Why I love my apple, because its quick, I save hours a day.
It doesn't take time to load. I use lots of free programs, and many that come preloaded.
I bought directly from apple, several times, and they were very helpful.
The computers are great.
Recently I dropped my laptop and cracked the screen. My fault. I had purchased insurance (which of course expired a few months ago) I returned it to an authorized repair service, and they replaced the screen, and also replaced another part which had cracked and was recalled by apple, which I never knew about. I was holding it together with scotch tape! I also upgraded my memory, and its like new again!

I love the apple, and you will too!

Windows 7 and OSX.6/.7 are more similar than previous operating systems, imo. PC guys hate Macs, Mac guys hate PCs, but most people could use either with no problem. I used to ONLY buy Macs--I was raised with both, but did not like Windows OSs from ME to Vista. Now, I'd have no problem buying a PC (because I think Windows 7 addressed many of the problems associated with the other OSs).

YOU could install a program on a Mac (I assume you can do one on a PC?). It's the same process. I promise. Pop in disk. Hit next, next, next, next, done. Wink

There are SOME basic programs that come preloaded, but for word processing, data spreadsheets, etc, you'll need to buy software unless you want to use open source or cloud.

Since 2004, I've had to take in my two Apple laptops(iBook and MacBook) and my mom's desktop (iMac) in exactly two times. One time, Mac helped us for free, for over an hour, in their store. Didn't charge us a thing. The other time, my extended warranty covered everything--and they replaced more parts than were necessary, so my iBook's lifespan was extended by two years for free.

I'm not one of those Mac fanatics, but I have been absolutely satisfied with their products, from 1993 to now.

I noticed that real computer guys arent big mac fans. I think mainly cause they like to do lots of big complicated things that arent all so compatible with mac.
But someone who isnt doing anything like that and is just using it for common, simple things, I think it's great. It's so easy to use. Every time I switch back to windows I have to get use to it again and I miss the mac.

Its interesting that people say that whoever uses a mac won't want to go back.
In high school, I got a Mac computer on loan for a year for an online course I was doing.

I like windows. I dislike macs. Even though I have had experience with them. Then again, this was 7 or 8 years ago, and I'm sure macs then are different than macs now.

Macs are moody. I had both at the same time at work, every time there was a blackout or a long weekend something was wrong with one of the macs and the solution was ALWAYS to reinstall the OS and all programs. I was always on the phone with Mac support.

What to get - you have to figure out how much RAM and memory you need and that might help you decide what to get. If you do image heavy stuff, I'd say don't get a macbook. I have an iMac and love it.

The best place to get it is either on apple.com or in an apple store.

I only needed it fixed once in over 3 years and that was because a CD got stuck in a weird way.

It does come with some basic programs. Log onto apple.com and check out the different options.

You can install any program yourself. It is SUPER simple. And if you can't, I think an apple guy in their shop will do so for you for free (or minimal charge).

I didn't find the change hard, but I like computers and figure out these things pretty fast. If it took you a long time to learn computers in general, I'd assume it'll take you a long time to learn a mac, but not as long.

I honestly don't see any cons to a mac, other than perhaps once in a while getting stuck because something isn't mac compatible (video, document or whatever).

I also want to add that not having to deal/worry about viruses is amazing!!!

For large Photoshop files you would want a lot of RAM. I use a Macbook Pro laptop and also have a large monitor. It's hard to work in Photoshop on a small monitor unless you are blessed with excellent eyesight and memorize a lot of keyboard shortcuts so you won't need to keep a bunch of palettes open.

Where is the best place to get it?
If you are a student or a teacher, you can get an educational discount on Apple's website.

As this can only be serviced by apple, how often does it need fixing? does it break easily?
Mac comes with a utility program, but I run a program called Alsoft DiskWarrior about once a month. You should do regular maintenance on your computer by yourself. For serious issues, depending where you live, you can take your computer to an Apple store or there might be a Mac specialist service guy near you. No, mine does not break easily.

Does it come preloaded with any programs?
Not games and work programs, at least mine didn't.

If I need programs like adobe will any computer guy be apple to install it or only apple? and will the charge me a fortune?
You can install it. Just follow the instructions. As far as buying programs, if you are a student or a teacher it will be cheaper.

How hard is it to change for a pc to a mac?
Took me about 3 weeks until I really felt comfortable. This was about 10 years ago. I'm in my 50's — for a younger person it should be a lot faster.

What are the pros and cons of a mac?
More durable, fewer viruses, more stylish, more expensive. Also, there are some programs written only for Windows. They can run on a Mac, but more slowly.

Most programs come in both - mac and pc compatible. You need to buy the mac version.
I don't know if every program has a mac compatible version. But I haven't had any issues with programs not working for mac. What programs do you use?

Some of the cheapie $10 programs don't work natively on a Mac. Also some (not all) high-end specialty programs. For example, in a field I know something about, Autocad, a program used primarily by architects and interior designers, does not currently have a Mac version. But I believe they're developing one.
