Never heard of it.
Elkana, Elchanan, Chananel, Chanania... those I've heard of.

I know two cousins called Elkan - both older men, but don't know of anyone else with this name.

Elkana is a normal (nice) name. And, Isramom, I don't think it would be too cool to have everyone laughing at him. We need to be sensitive to that issue as well. My nephew's first name is Pesach and although he doesn't go by it, till today he gets comments.

Neither Pesach nor Elkan are laughable names. Only, Elkan will get misspelled. And some will say Eldan, but they will sound stupid.

Pesach may not sound laughable to you but my nephew has been taking flak for that name for 36 years!

If it's אלכאן I find it a presumptuous name and would not give it to a kid. I can't figure out what else it may be, unless it's not Hebrew?
אלקנה is biblical and beautiful.

I can't find my Beider book, but I think I remember Elkan would be a short Yiddish form of Elkana?
