do you have any general guidelines? do you prefer modern/classic/Israeli/Yiddish/Ladino or anything like that? Biblical characters/historical figures vs. meaningful words/ideas? Anything to work with?

for boys I like soft sounding names like aviel, yonah, ariel
for girls I like shalva, atara, ariella, aliyana

I generally dislike names with a "ch" sound in them...very soft names with vowels, Ls and Rs are nice to me..

In approximate order of favorites....

Girls: Elisheva, Rivka, Miriam, Chaya, Nechama, Shoshana, Sara, Meira

Boys: Aharon*, Dovid**, Avraham, Moshe, Menachem, Ovadya, Shmaya, Akiva, Ezra

*Aharon is not actually something I like enough to use it stam, but it is the name of my grandfather a"h, and will be our first boy's name, iy"H.

**Dovid was not a favorite till we got married and I realized what my husband's name meant for this name. Now I want a Dovid ben Yishai. LOL

(edited to add some names I forgot the first time)

girls: meira (got to use it! yay!), shalva, avigayil (can't use cuz MIL's name), chaviva, hadassah, menucha, odelia (DH would never let!), rachel (pronounced the israeli way, rah-chEL), tikva, zahava

boys: Doniel (can't use cuz our last name is too similar), Avigdor, Dov, Dovid, Ephraim (can't use cuz it's my father's name), Gedalia, Meir, Mordechai, Ovadia, Saadia
(I'll never get a choice though, cuz DH feels our boys should be named after gedolim. I've put my foot down so far on his #1 choice, Alter Chanoch Henach....)

I am also b'H also in the market for a nice baby name :-)
Problem is I really can't stand the sound of most super-frum names... lol. 98% of them rub me the wrong way!
Well, here's a few I like... (some are family names) But still haven't found "the one", I don't think.

Girls: Dalia, Ellina, Zahava, Tiferes, Zohar, Yecheved, Naamah Basya, Eliyana, Adina, Josephina, Sarai. (esp like the last two - but does anyone name their dd Sarai/Saraiah ? Not sure if we typically name for Sarah's original name, before H' changed it? )

Boys: Shaya (Yeshaya), Micha, David, Jeremiah, Zacharia, Jonah, Asher.

I was told that Shira is a problematic name to give? I know of some shiras who went to a certain godal for a brcha for whatever reason and he said shira what name is this and made them all change their names to something biblical..

mind you my niece is shira rachel but is known as shira...
