Do you prefer a few ladies from the block gathering and opening a sefer about the parsha or do you prefer a Rabbi or other trained/knowledgeable speaker on a subject?

And, if you had to pay for the above, what's your budget/limit?

I would prefer the latter .

I think 10 dollers would be o.k.

Ten dollars? You really think people have so much money, momoftwins, that they should spend $10 to get together in someome's apt each week? Besides all the other learning they do and all the other paid events they attend?

You should know that people by us balk at $4 shiurim! No one is going to pay $10 !!!!

I would prefer a lecture.

I don't see why ANY money should be paid if it's ladies getting together to learn. To pay who?

I agree with choc. that if it's an ongoing lecture it can only be a few dollars.

I prefer when there is a speaker, but he either gives out text or we learn from inside the sefer.. I get much more involved that way and it's also more intellectually stimulating for me. Also, if I work through the material on my own, I feel much more connected with it and I internalize it better.

People pay for shiurim??????????????

I have NEVER heard of such a thing!!!

I have an ongoing shiur once a week, one on one, should I be paying the person I'm learning with?

I pay for most of the shiurim I got to in my neighborhood.

The place we are meeting has to be lit, heated or ac’d……sometimes there are refreshments, and of course the magid shiur is giving of his or her time and gets paid for that, plus traveling if necessary!

I wonder if this is a cultural/locality thing because I have never heard of paying for a shiur, unless its like a one off public event, type lecture.

Everything cost money. If you aren't charged, then someone is sponsoring it.

I once went to a shiur where each of the ladies who went took a turn preparing and delivering the shiur. I really liked that idea, but unfortunately there don't seem to be many shiurim of that type.

You can sponsor for birthday, a yortzeit, a simcha. It's a contribution to the shul - look in the siddur, after kriah, about people who donate money to the shul.

The (partial) zchus of the learning.

There's advertising. Heat or ac for the night, lights, any nosh, cleanup. Someone to arrange the chairs.

you must be talking about a larger scale shiur, public event type of thing.

when you mentioned a weekly shiur, I thought of one of those little in someone's home type thing. We have a weekly shiur but there is no charge.

I go to a bunch of shiurim, BH.

Yes, one is in a private home......she still has to put out a nosh & a drink, the paper goods, make the phone calls...and pay the speaker (that alone is $50.)

our speaker doesn't charge.

both speaker and host would be offended if we tried to pay them.

Okay, good for you.

I find you get what you pay for - if you pay someone, they're more apt to be on time, etc.

that may be your experience and it certainly makes sense.

Maybe its that our person is a unique individual but she is incredibly devoted and always comes on time and starts on time.
