Looking for something with wi-fi that I could watch shows, read, and/or access internet while I'm on the treadmill. Would the regular Kindle work ($99 value) or is the Kindle Fire so much better?

You would have to get a Kindle Fire. It's a "tablet" than can access the internet. A regular Kindle with wifi is only able to use the internet access to download books for the reader.

my mother can access webpages in black and white on her 3g kindle. there are several different types of basic kindle, but they are primarily for reading.
a kindle fire is a great deal and is very cheap for what it is. Apart from not having a camera it can do pretty much what an ipad does. It's not available outside the us.
(the reason why it is so cheap is because amazon wants you to buy movies and books from them)

For reading e-books, I think the regular kindle is better.
For movies and browsing, the fire is.
The kindle fire is great because it's more portable and durable than the ipad.
Downsides:
not too much storage (though you can store for free online)
no usb
needs WiFi for internet connection.

leah, and a much shorter battery life then the regular kindle. 10 hours vs about a month.
