Did anyone else read about the 67 year old Spanish woman who had twins, with the aid of an American fertility specialist?

I think this is fairly irresponsible, both on the part of the doctor and the woman. Is it really fair to kids to have them so late with the aid of medical science? The article also did not mention her being married.

I think it was irresponsible on the part of the doctor. He should know better then to impregnante someone that old.

Instead of looking at it this way, I prefer to look at the great advances in medicine and technology that Hashem has brought the world to as a chesed from HKBH, that in the near future we will be zoche to the fulfillment of the brocho: "There shall not be amongst you a barren man or woman....".

I have close friends who this 67 year old Spanish woman's personal news might spell hope for. Whether she herself is worthy, or unworthy of this deliverance is a small issue, what counts is that thousands of Jewish women who may even have given up, deserve this ray of hope.

Again, the actual details of how this was accomplished at the moment may matter, but what's really paramount is that in the future, all the ethical and halachic issues will be resolved in some way, and bring closer the time for deliverance (pun intended) of Jewish women suffering from infertility - in a kosher, halachically approved way.

Sure. I agree with that, just it's not the big part of the picture.

I have an ancestress who gave birth a bit before 55, I suppose that with our better health care and longer life expectancy, it is just like the 67 year old woman. Now, if she is not married, I really hope the children will have a father figure and she will have some help at house.

Youre gonna tell me that this Alteh Babbeh will have patience to deal with a newborn, nonetheless twins?? She will have patience to get up to them at night? will she have patience to run around after them? even will all the hired help? Yeah right! I guess she just wanted everyone to talk about her. Well, she really shouldn't have done it. You can say nebach for them because they're going to have a very very old mother. She and the dr's should've known better, the twins didnt ask to be born.

Having no idea of the circumstances of this birth, I choose to focus not on the individual person to whom it occurred, but on the amazing, exciting breakthrough that it represents, for older infertile couples who the world, doctors and everyone have given up hope for till now. It is truly "Moshiach's tzeiten", and it is known that the great advances of science and technology in our age ARE a foretaste of the Geulah, an age when all illness and disability will disappear, it's a kind of preview!

yes, it's great that younger couples who could be helped by new medical advances have had that opportunity for close to two decades now, but some who went through infertility just one decade earlier did not. Their homes were empty and their hearts were full of pain while their peers were raising their families, and now there are no grandchildren either. Crying

I am thrilled that this is taking place.

E59Y, Do you like being called a young shnook? Why can't you "fargin" motherhood to those who have been cheated out of it for all those long agonizing years? Do you have no compassion or respect for "alteh babbehs"? Do you consider them less human than "shnooks"?

I don't think extremely young mothers have much patience either, and often their children are raised by... the grandmother... so who knows.

I didnt mean alteh babbeh for the 40 or 50 yr olds. I meant alteh babbeh for the 60 yr olds. Who in their right minds has children then?? Will she even be around when the children grow up?? A little seichel goes a long way.

Ditto, no one should have children, because we all die!

I just can't resist posting a joke I once heard:

A woman of (let's say...) 67 had a baby and a friend came to visit. They chatted for a while and then the friend said, "well, let's see the baby". The new mother then replied, "I'd show you him, only I can't remember where I put him..." LOL

Anyway....

On the more serious side of things, I like Tzena's perspective of things. Also, since the period before the geulah is called "chevlei mashiach" (the birthpains of Mashiach) this is a sign that however "old" galut is getting, there is new hope at every moment for the true "deliverance" to take place!

BTW 67 is the gematria of "binah"...

Then I'll repeat. Maybe the old lady will be around for a longer time than us. Life is not always predictable, the older doesn't always die before the younger. I'm sorry if this is too disturbing for you.

Well, I have read a follow-up to this story.
She indeed is single. To top it all off, she lied to the fertility clinic and said she was 55 and not 67.
Now she says she wants to find a younger husband to help raise her 2 baby boys. Isn't this putting the cart before the horse? Rolling Eyes
