My son is approaching bar mitzvah age and so is everyone in his class. He's been invited to several parties so far and more are coming. I was wondering when others have been in this position, what is the general protocol for gift giving? I have asked around in our community and no one has a real answer, everyone does differently. It will get very expensive (there are 36 in his class) even to spend ten dollars each. However, if my kid is invited to a party, of course I want to send a gift. Girls are easier, you can get away with costume jewelry, crafts, a box of chocolates, so many different kinds of things. Boys, though, I am at a loss. Any ideas? Thanks.

I know tons of schools take care of it - they collect x amount from each kid for all the bar/bas mitzvahs at once and every kids gets a choice of things (sforim, machzorim, etc). that way it's even and doesn't cost a fortune. Maybe you could have someone arrange it in the school.
