no school, the building has no power, and far rockaway in general is in a bad situation

today some classes got together in ppl's houses that did have power, and the rebbeim came from 10-11:30 to do some learning with the boys.

I know this was arranged for 1st and 2nd grade, I'm not sure about other grades.
each rebbe tried to contact their own class however many ppl. are unreachable due to phone lines and cell phone service being out in alot of those areas.

they haven't decided if they will be doing it again tomorrow, as most of the community will be making alternate shabbos arrangements after spending a whole week without heat, lights, hot food...

they said they will be sending out a mass email later tonight.

Thank you for your reply! I just don't understand why they can't send out an e-mail saying "no school tomorrow, further details coming later". At least just let me know that I don't have to show up tomorrow and can make Shabbos plans!

Thank you for responding! Smile

ACHIEZER UPDATE 11/1
First of all, we continue to be amazed and in total awe of the rallying of support from volunteers, donors and others around the world, who are assisting the individuals and families in need during this devastating time.

The following are a few key, critical updates that should be forwarded and shared to any email lists that you have.

1. LIPA -

It seems that restoration in the Five Towns have begun on several blocks. Parts of Lawrence and Cedarhurst are currently operational as well as significant portions of Woodmere. We will try to share specific updates for specific Five Towns communities as soon as we have them available. The Far Rockaway area LIPA situation is not good. There is a high probability that we will not see power for at least another 7 days. We know that more than 200 generators have been purchased by community members but most people do not have access to electric. Additonally, due to the severe gasoline shortages, those who do have generators will be unable to operate them. We have spoken with Senator Chuck Schumer as well as other community leaders who are doing everything within their power to provide gasoline resources to our communities. We will try to have an update in several hours. We must urge that if you know of any elderly relative, friend or family member that are still insisting on staying in their homes without electric they should please make alternate plans as this may go on for some time.

2. SHABBOS PLANS -

Numerous organizations including Agudath Israel of America, the Vaad Harabonim of Queens and the JCC of Marine Park have been spearheading a city wide effort to prepare, identify and set up available homes for displaced people from our communities. Due to the thousands of calls received on our hotline, we would like to request that anyone who is offering their homes to those in need, should please email us at SHELTER@ACHIEZER.ORG. If anyone is still in need of a place to stay for Shabbos or as early as tonight, please call our hotline to be set up with the shelter coordinators.

3. CLOTHING -

We are compiling lists of those that are in the immediate need of clothing. There is a clothing gemach that has already been set up at 533 Reads Lane in Far Rockaway. Anyone who requires may go there for clothing for men, women, boys and girls as well as coats and shoes. If anyone would like to donate clothing to members of the community, please email CLOTHING@ACHIEZER.ORG.

4. FOOD -

If you have no choice but to remain in homes in the Far Rockaway/Five Towns and does not have food for Shabbos or during the week, please call our hotline and prepared foods will be made available for you. (Please keep in mind that many people do not have access to email. Please share this information with anyone you know.) Fully catered meals are being made available to anyone in the Far Rockaway/Five Towns communities who require. Please email FOOD@ACHIEZER.ORG or call 646-481-2004 to let us know how many meals are needed. The MET Council along with the JCCRP have opened up a respite area in the White Shul as well as the Young Israel of Bayswater starting at 7pm for Far Rockaway/Bayswater residents. Anyone who would like some hot food or a place to charge your phones may go there starting tonight.

5. TRANSPORTATION -

We have dozens of volunteers standing by who are ready to assist by transporting people wherever they need to get to. Additionally, if you know of any elderly, wheelchair bound or homebound people that require an ambulette for transportation, that can be arranged as well. At this point, it is simply unsafe for this population to remain in their homes. If you would like to volunteer, please email TRANSPORTATION@ACHIEZER.ORG.

6. FINANCIAL NEEDS -

As you have all heard, there is an international effort being arranged to assist those who have been financially crushed by this hurricane. A board of trustees have already met and the fund details will be circulated shortly. We will post specific plans of how one will be able to access this fund. If anyone has any questions, concerns or particular needs with respect to these issues, please email HURRICANEFUND@ACHIEZER.ORG. In the interim, if anyone would like to donate funds for this specific cause, please go to www.achiezer.org/donate.php and follow the specific memo instructions.
