have an area near the entrance to your home that is set up for keys, shoes, purse, etc. get into the habit of putting everything there as you come in. teach your kids to remove their shoes when they come in and put them in their place. you can have shoe racks, buckets, hooks, whatever you have space for. have a shelf, hook, or hanging pocket for your keys, cell phone, wallet, etc.

I'm a pretty organized person, but extremely forgetful.
I guess putting these things in the same place all the time would help, or hey! Hang a note on your door listing the things you're supposed to take along when you go out.
Shoes- I have a hanging shoe holder inside a closet that's helpful for that.
Right now my main organization pressure is- filling up my freezer! And making weekly menus in advance, I used to be on top of it more.
Preparing whatever you can the night before is a true must, I've found.
