Most of my shoes have some type of embellishment with gold in it. For example black shoes with a gold buckle. Can I wear silver toned jewelry? Does this really matter? My girls, in their young 20s say it does.

It matters only if you care. Generally people with conservative taste try not to mix yellow and white metal, but it's hardly a sin. Especially if the "odd man out" is your shoes--they're way down there near the floor, who's going to care that the metal trim on them doesn't match your earrings? "Clashing" earrings and necklace, ok, some will consider you gauche--and some will consider you a fashion leader. Today's no-no is tomorrow's trend if you wear it with confidence.

So many people have looked this thread and not replied. Guess they just don't know the answer! But I forgot to check how many 'likes'.
Personally, I am not sure, but I probably avoid shoes w/ metallic trim for this reason.

I'm sort of surprised that women in their 20s are giving you that advice. Mixing metals in jewelry has been acceptable, even chic, for at least a decade. "It must all be one color..." Went out with matchy matchy handbags and shoes.
Wear. Enjoy. You'll look great.
