Anything you'd buy a married woman of the same age. Marital status is irrelevant

Perfume, picture frame, candle, stationary, mug, gift card to a favorite store

Amex gift card
Spa gift card
Warm pretty slippers for the house (with super comfortable slippers, it doesn't have to be her taste)

How much do you want to spend though?

Totally depends on your budget and her personality.
Things I would love that a single woman would also like:
Sephora gift card (or a gift set from Sephora that can be exchangeable in case the colors aren't right. I am particularly eyeing the Marc Jacobs mini lipstick gift set, thinking of purchasing it)
Ugg slippers
Designer scarf (silk or for outdoors), or warm fur/leather gloves
Gift card to salon nearby
Starbucks gift card
Designer bag/wallet/phone case/clutch
Gift card to Amazon, target, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom depending on how much you want to spend (for Amazon and target $36 is enough but for bloomies and Nordstrom I think you need to spend more)
Perfume/scented lotion that is exchangeable
One (or a few! That's generous!) of the newest cookbooks if she likes to cook/bake, or any new book you think she'd like (that is exchangeable)

Everything allthingsblue said! One of my closest friends gave me a subscription to The New Yorker and another gave me the new Amos Oz book. I mention these to make the point that the person's interests determine the gift, not marital status.

I love giving those gift sets that include bathsalts lotions etc.
Can't go wrong with that
And I for one love taking baths to relax myself and I'm always buying new bathsalts and things like that.

check out sephora's perfume samplers, it's a great gift. it's a pretty box with several trial-sized perfumes and a coupon inside to redeem for a full-sized bottle. comes in different price ranges

I do not like gifts of anything scented.
Gift cards are the best.
does she like to pamper herself? Spa gift card. Does she like coffee? Starbucks
Does she travel? Amazon or a specific store for things she might need for an upcoming trip.
If someone doesn't know the difference between Gucci and coach, do not get her a designer purse.

Personally, as a single (divorced) female, I'd love a nice bottle of peaty scotch.

Or maybe a really good cordless drill. Actually I also saw this cool thing on Amazon, a magnetic wrist band so I don't lose screws and don't have to dig in pockets.
