Our shul has children's hakafot earlier on Thurs night (usually before Minchah)
Works out great - this way they dance with the torahs, and then come home to go to sleep.

One night is plenty. Don't forget we are still in the sukkah tonite. And think of the crowds....

Some have the minhag to just make kiddush tonite and tomorrow and then eat in the house, our Vishnitz landlord used to do that.
Lubavitchers eat the whole meal in the sukkah - without Leshev Basukkah - tonite and tomorrow....tomorrow afternoon, we say Goodbye to the sukka.

Growing up in chu"l, we ate both meals on Shemini Atzeres in the sukkah (without a bracha).
But I never heard of hakafos on S"A in chu"l! Do they do it only at night? With the Ata hareisa's and Torahs and everything or just dancing? 7 full hakafos?
For us in E"Y, the question would be reversed - Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah are the same thing, so you would have to ask, "Do you take your children to Hakafos Shniyos (the night after Simchas Torah)?" There they have live bands and lots of dancing. (The answer is no - at least at this point, when our oldest is 6 - but we can hear the music from across the street loud and clear and even see a peek of the dancing through the windows of the shul!)
