How do you call someone named Eliyohu?
Eliyohu
Ellie
Eliyuhi
Elye

I've noticed that in the Chasidishe world all Eliyohus are called Elya, with an exeption of Eliyohu Hanovi, who is called Eliyuhi Hanuvi.
In the non Chasidish world I know only Elies and Eliyohus or Elliot.
Does anyone non Chasidish use the name Elye?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm Chasidih myself and had a grandfater Eliyohu who was called Elye. I personaly dislike the name Elye. Elie or Eliyuhi sound much better.

funny story about this one. I have a cousin Eliyahu and we actually call him Eliyahu. My grandmother who isn't religous wanted to put a birth annoucement in the newspaper. So she put the name of my cousin as "Eliyahu Hanavi" . We were cracking up. It one of those funny family sotries.

I've actually heard of the name Elya as a name for itself. (as in not short for anything)

My nephew's name is Eliyahu. He is named for R' Eliyahu Lopian (1872-1970), the mashgiach of the yeshivah in Kfar Chassidim, Israel. He was a Litvish baal bussar and known as R' Elya.

My nephew is called .... Eliyahu!

What about Yahoo?

Ok, seriously though our neighbors call their son Lalu. It might be because his older siblings couldn't say Eliyahu and that's what they could say.

Their oldest is Eliezer and he's called Lazer.

LOLOLOLOL LOL

Good one.

anyway, I had a great uncle Elik. I really like Elish. I don't go for Eli at all.
I think Elya is beautiful. For those of you who never heard of Elya, what about R' Elya Svei and R' Elya Lopian?

(I have a friend married to Eliyohu Lopian, a grandson of R' Elya Lopian.)
