I got this email:

Duncan Hines has announced that they will be making all their cake mixes
dairy (until now they were all parve). This would remove from the market
the last major brand of cake mixes that Jews who keep kosher can use
with a meat meal. Oy! But you can help!!!!!! (Seriously!). When Nabisco
made a similar announcement regarding its Stella Doro Cookies (a
favorite Shabbat dinner dessert in many homes) they were flooded with
requests not to change and it WORKED - they switched the cookies back to
Parve.

So, please, even if you do not keep kosher (this is important for those
of us who are lactose intolerant too!), please read the article below
and then visit Pinnacle Foods to let them know you appreciate Duncan
Hines being dairy free and oppose any change to make its OU certified
baked goods dairy. You can file a concern at http://www.duncanhines.com
in the "about us" section under the "contact us" option. Just fill out
the form and click submit.

And pass it on!!!

ANNOUNCEMENT

Duncan Hines Set to Make Cake Mix Products Dairy
Cherry Hill, NJ)

A line of popular Orthodox Union (OU) certified cake
mixes by Duncan Hines will soon switch to dairy
ingredients, Kosher Today has learned. The decision
will affect the large number of kosher consumers
that have been using the cake mixes because they are
pareve and can be eaten with meat as well as many of
the 56 million Americans who are lactose intolerant. A
similar decision by Stella Dora of Nabisco several
years ago was greeted by a large outcry byconsumers, which caused the company to reverse the
decision.

Duncan Hines was owned by Procter and Gamble for
many years but when it experienced difficulty was sold
to Pinnacle Foods, based in Cherry Hill, NJ, which
also acquired such well-known kosher brands as
Lender's Bagels. Industry sources say that Duncan
Hines decided to add the dairy to improve the quality
of the product. The decision by Duncan Hines comes at
a time when there is growing demand for pareve
products by kosher consumers and by many lactose
intolerant people. The cake mixes allowed many
consumers to bake their own pareve cakes for use on
Shabbat and holidays. Some industry sources were
privately hoping that the company would not go through
with the change, but if it does, a "D" will be added
to the OU indicating that dairy ingredients are being
used.

I used to do so many things with the yellow cake mix, butter flavor (parev), marble, chocolate, brownies...........

no more easy/fast strawberry shortcakes..........
no more mini cakes made within 3 minutes (box to oven)
no more chocolate trifles (choc cake with ice cream/mousse....)

I can go on and on.
however will leave hespedim for another time.

Could someone post some of these recipes, or others, that can be made with the Dunkan Hines cake mixes? They sound yummy and I would like to try them before they disappear.

Mommy 912,
using a yellow cake mix or angel food cake mix you can make strawberry shortcake.
prepare the mix according to the box. bake it in 2 separate pans, or you can cut it in half afterward.
put on layer of cake, then a whipped up Rich's whip (you can add some vanilla sugar to that if you want), then sliced strawberries, 2nd layer of cake, whipped cream, strawberries. That's it!
I have triple chocolate cake using Devil's food cake mix, an instant pudding mix, choc. chips, and coffee. I'll try to post that tomorrow.
I also use the devil's food cake mix for a trifle. one layer of cake. next layer is choc. chip cookies that were dipped in a mixture of coffee, vodka/kahlua, and non-dairy creamer (milk). and then rich's whip. repeat all layers, then I garnish with chocolate shavings.

I e-mailed them as sonn as I heard. one of my best desserts starts with a duncan hines cake.
also, the brownies are the best- better than any recipe ive tried, and that says alot.
I prefer to bake from scratch, but as a last minute dessert, it works great. did any of you know that you can bake a dh cake in your bread machine?
it's great to know when the oven is in use

that's cute shani5...... never thought of baking a cake in bread machine.

mommyof2- We were also (slightly) concerned about that..... but what exactly is in the boxes to begin with? I'll probably put each box into its own ziplock bag- that way I wont have to worry about bugs. (even though each mix is in a bag, within the box already)

613- thanks for posting the shortcake 'recipe'.... that's exactly how I make it as well. Your trifle sounds REALLY GOOD!!!!

mommy912- my chocolate cake trifle: (I make these when my mousse flops!)
at bottom of trifle bowl: layer of cubed choc cake (slightly crumbled)
pour mousse mixture ontop.
layer of chocolate whip (some mousse mixed together with whip to make it light brown)
layer of regular white whip
(begin the order again, starting with choc cake)

top layer should be white whip. can put marichino cherries ontop for garnish.... or chocolate bar shavings.

With Duncan Hines brownies------ I have (kind of large) flower shaped cookie cutters, which I cut the brownies with. Place scoop of ice cream ontop and serve. For my sisters sheva brachos, we made this dessert, but served each person on their own mini cake plate (on a stand) IT LOOKED SO AMAZING. and no one knew it was blessed duncan hines brownies!!!!!

3/4 c margarine (softened)
1 1/2 c sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
3 eggs
3/4 c flour
1/2 c coca
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 c chocolate chips (optional)

Mix together margarine and sugar. Add vanilla and eggs and mix well. Add dry ingredients and mix well (electric mixer works best but I've done it by hand). Add chocolate chips.

Bake for 35-40 min at 350 (time varies depending on the pan size used), or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Frosting:
1/2 c margarine
2/3 c cocoa
3 c confectioners sugar
1/3 c water
1 tsp vanilla

Just mix it really well! Frost when brownies are completely cooled. Frosts 9 x 13 pan size, so halve it if you're using a smaller pan (unless you like LOTS of frosting)

And yes, while the OU holds that things produced on the same line as dairy are OU-D, not all rabbis say that it is treated as dairy. Ask your LOR for a psak, but the one we asked said they can be treated as parve.[/quote]

I just saw the new OU - D boxes today
(when buying out the rest of the OU that were
left in this part of town) and it says very clearly
in the list of ingredients (final ingredient; but
very much a real ingredient) "Nonfat milk powder" !!

Sounds dairy to me....javascript:emoticon('Crying')

I saw in the stores how most say OU-D and although I don't make them all the time, they're good to have when you want to make a quick cake.
I was also wondering about expiration dates...I saw in a Jewish store some DH cake mixes that expire around now....the prices were reduced....I may not use them soon, they should stay good, yet?

Making duncan hines cakes are nice and easy, but the truth is making your own cake is probably as easy.
Just you have to measure out the dry ingredients.
It is a shame that DH will go dairy because my oven is fleishig, I have some brownie mixes still in the cupboard, but I loved the muffins I bought in September when I was in the US. The shop here sells the devils chocolate and the brownie mix.
If they go dairy...well I will have to start making my own cakes again or just buy them from the bakery.
Anyway DH make yummy cakes, maybe someone should start up their own make and do cake boxes. I understand the koshery makes do this, but they don't have much of a selection and they don't taste as nice.

what IS the scoop with expiring DH mixes, does anyone know?

We must have (don't laugh, cuz I'm serious) 40 PLUS boxes..... and only another year and a half (or so) to use them.

maybe we'll start putting up (pareve) DH on eBay!!!!!!!
