Can I substitute Date Syrup for Corn Syrup in this recipe?
Chocolate Scotcheroos
Ingredients
1 cup white sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1 cup peanut butter
6 cups crispy rice cereal
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
Directions
Butter a 9x13 inch baking pan.
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and corn syrup, and bring to a rolling boil. Remove from heat, and stir in peanut butter. Mix in the rice cereal until evenly coated. Press the mixture into the prepared pan.
In a glass bowl in the microwave, melt the chocolate and butterscotch chips, stirring occasionally until smooth and well blended. Spread over the top of the bars. Chill until set, then cut into bars.

They'll be dark colored but if you like the date taste go for it.

Ill think Ill risk it, because I try not to use corn syrup (even though theres nothing about this recipe thats healthy). Hopefully the peanut butter will over power it.
I used to buy Brown Rice Syrup in the health food store and they dont carry it any more.

Same! My kids are begging for rice crispy treats but I can't find brown rice syrup.

Would honey be a better option?

I used to add a bit of honey to the brown rice syrup. I don't think it will work well on its own. I may be wrong though.

Ive used Brown Rice Syrup as well, but once I go with healthy ingredients, I looked up syrups on the EWG website and this specific item has a pretty low toxicity level. The ratings go from 1 which is least toxic to 10 which is most toxic.

As far as Hechsher, I called CRC and was told Date Syrup with only one ingredient doesnt need a Hechsher (this specific one has a Hechsher but I wasnt sure about it).
