Looking to help build up our local Jewish library, plus while I’m at it recommend some good books to my kids & myself too! I love reading but aside from magazines have done very little reading the last many years, so please help me out:
I’m looking for well written books, old or new (but still in print):
What are great books for lower elementary?
Great books for pre-teens?
Great books for teens?
And great books for adults?
Please list your favorite Jewish authors or books, and include which age it’s for, how well written it is, if it’s historical fiction, realistic fiction, adventure/ terror category etc. etc.
Thank you!!!

I love Rachel Pomerantz. Very well constructed, realistic (but very perceptive) characters.
Some other classics:
- The Pomegranate Pendant (excellent historical fiction)
- Sun Inside Rain (M. Bassara)
- Alef Shin (very Tom Clancy-ish)
I enjoy most of Eva Vogiel's books, not usually earth shattering, but very warm and enjoyable.

I heard that Aleph Shin had recently been reprinted. DGS worked in a bookstore over the summer and bought it.

Really? Didn’t see it in my local bookstore. I’m in Brooklyn.

Every man a slave is AMAZING and I kick myself for all those years of seeing it on finkelstein librarys shelf and passing over it because the cover looked awful. (It does! It needs a better cover!)
(Historical fiction. During times of slavery...insanely well written, not at all Jewish style)

I second "Every Man a Slave" By Sender Zyev (also authored Alef Shin) his last book is poorly written. Dont remember the name. I only appreciated these books once I was a young adult.
EG schwartz-Short changed, Full Harvest.
M. Kenan-His first to books (The Betrayal & The Outcast) are better than the last one (Dark Secrets?) high school +
Avner Gold-preteen+not so well written.
Mrs Honigs Cakes-Favorite for 8+

What are great books for lower elementary?
Red Yellow Blue Yarn (or something like that) by Miriam Kosman
Dena Rosenfeld's books
When I Am a Mommy/When I Am an Abba - Dishy Schiffman
Yaffa Ganz's books
The Search for the Stones
Manny's A Thief - Getzel
As Big As An Egg - Sandman
Great books for pre-teens?
Mimi in the Middle, Mimi's Summer (or something like that) - Altein
Other Altein books are OK too, some might be for young or older teens
We Want Life! - one of the early shemiras halashon books
The 23 Under One Roof series
Series like BY Times, Kid Sisters, Bakers' Dozen
Miriam Elias's books
Great books for teens?
(This is the sandwich category. There will be some overlap.)
The Stars Will Guide You, Into the Fire - Walfish
The Exiles of Crocodile Island, This is America - Meyer
The Kazar series - Kenan
As Long As I Live - Margalit
Shortchanged - Schwartz
To Remain a Jew - Rav Yitzchak Zilber
And great books for adults?
Sun Inside Rain - Bassara
Emunah With Love and Chicken Soup
And G-d Winked - Rigler
Honestly, I don't know where to begin. I'm going to stop, random as this is, and I'm sure when I wake up in the middle of the night I'll be flooded with titles. Let's just say, to be continued.
