She'll be going into 9th grade. Would that be considered 8th grade or is she older than this age group?

That's considered 8th grade. She's the right age.

My sister tutored math last summer (she was just post high school though)

Sometimes people davka want tutoring in the summer when their kid had fun all day in camp, and is more open to learning, than after a full day of school when they are already burned out..

So all these girls who are not in camp will be working for pennies in day camps?
I don’t understand why parents put up with that.
I feel like parents should get together and demand a reasonable pay rate.

I agree with you in theory, but in practice, parents of these girls working in camps are just so desperate not to have to pay for their child’s summer experience (and don’t want them to stay home) that they allow this. Myself included. The camps do take terrible advantage and it is slave labor, but my child is occupied during the day and I don’t have to pay for it.... As the child gets older and is post high school/seminary looking for a job, it’s nice to have employment experience on their resume.

I live in Lakewood and I would love to have a 14 year old read with my daughter over the summer. I can't say I'd pay too much. I mean, the reading specialist gets $60/hour. I wouldn't pay a girl anywhere near that, but I'd be willing in theory to have a girl come to read with my struggling reader and encourage her a couple times a week. At this point, its more about the practice then about knowing the strategies so her age would be fine. Or what about Hebrew kriah review?? So many kids fall behind in the summer. Not sure how you'd find that out, can you ask at your child's school if the principal would reach out to some parents of girls who might like this service?

It is hard, btw. Its not like there are easy answers. I have had kids stay home during the summer. This year, I put my foot down Smile. They could all choose a camp, but they have to be out of the house. When they were home in the past, it put a lot of pressure on me to go places, find a pool for some swimming, go to pizza, ice cream, etc. And it added up financially too. For me, this year I think camp is a better deal Smile.
