Want to make a closet or two on a 13 foot wall. I’m told the shelves are 16”, how deep should to closet be and how wide?

I would make them 18" deep. With a 13' wall consider 48" double doors — 36" double doors — 48" double doors. If you're doing sliding doors, then 2 closets each about 72" wide.
Yes, I do space planning, residential & kitchen design professionally.

Thank you so much for your professional input.
The handyman suggest 24” deep. Is there any reason to have more space in front of the shelves? And I’m thinking of doing 3 closets, each 4 feet wide with 2-20” closet doors that swing open

20" wide is not a common door size. Where did you find them?
The rationale for 24" deep closets would be if
1) you might want to use one as a clothes closet and 24" is a standard depth for that, or
2) you have some really big toys or you are parking kid vehicles inside.
But that also means less space in the actual room, so think it over carefully.

We built a 24" deep toy closet because we want the closet to be versatile so we have the ability to convert it to a hanging clothes closet if necessary down the line. The shelves are between 20-21" deep and they are a great size.
18" shelves would be big enough for the good containers we have.
24" shelves would be too deep and you'd end up with a mess.

They have the doors at Lowe’s and the local building supply company.
I don’t plan on ever using it for clothes.
