I've been so sick of poor workmanship and off styles that I actually recently bought a sewing machine. I figured that there is no way I can do a worse job than many of the dresses I see in stores. Going into the city for my first lesson today, beezrat Hashem!

Wow!!!
I overbought last year and barely wore my stuff. I felt like I couldn't justify buying new at this pop so I have not even looked.
This thread made me curious, so I checked the links. Boy am I pleased with myself. Go me for over-shopping 2018-19!!!

Op that yellow NYC dress isn't so bad
I wonder if your personal palette is not autumn, it makes everything worse (mine isn't either - j don't touch yellow, mustard or brown).
I haven't shopped but I was just in h&m and things looked normal. Target has some great stuff in their modest lines. And lord Taylor I saw tons of mannequin with tznius dresses.
Are you on the fb group, of tznius modest clothing finds.

Yup just to remind us where the idolized fashion houses are getting their ridiculous ideas from, here's text copied & pasted from a fashion comment website:
"For many of us the world seems to be on the verge of collapse, and designers are certainly not excluded from having this perception. There was an impending sense of doom that either colored or inspired many of the fall/ winter 2019 fashion trends.
In many cases it meant that we saw garments crafted as though the apocalypse had already occurred: either extremely minimalist and utilitarian, or inspired by films like the Matrix. Nineties grunge was everywhere, and that’s a style that certainly conveys to us that we might be living in the end times."
And to an above poster, yeah, "SLIP dresses" (CALLED so by the fashion world) are THE thing now!

As someone famously said, you're really going to let some menuvel in Paris decide what you should wear?

I can understand someone doesn't want to look nebby. But if the designers can't design anything normal, you're going to let them dictate to you what to wear?

Maybe try some more classic styles with an accesory to update?

I agree that its slim pickings, but I found some great classy and classic skirts on the macys website and was able to match them with tops from zara's.

I also, on amother from a different thread's advice, found some AMAZING Skirts with matching tops at Burlington. None to clingy or backside hugging, all a few inches below my knee (I'm 5"4).

I think Im the OP of the thread that mentioned Burlington (if youre referring to the one that mentioned 50 y.o.s).

1. Most of the better stuff in Burlington isnt available online.

2. I was in a Burlington today, and the better stuff is pretty much gone.

Any reason no one mentioned Foxs?

Op how about a classic skirt with one of the NYandCo blouses? Also have you tried White House Black Market or Banana Republic?

As someone posted, nineties grunge aka ugly fashion, is very in right now. So if you want to be on trend you’re going to have to embrace it!

Thanks for these! I might try some of them. I actually had ordered the last one, but I need to return because it was huge. That’s the problem with Zara. Nothing fits me.

I never go by exact trends and don't buy everything I see. Very Happy Always keep classic pieces in your closet that you can update with some trendy accessories.

So funny I bought 2 shabbos outfits and 2 pairs of shoes from Zara. I love zara styles. Not all of them but they always have some really nice things.

The larger Zara styles usually need belts. Unless you're into the man-repelling fashion

I realized the stuff they are selling in dept stores for children & adults is either really sporty & funky or back to classics like plaid dresses.

Jewish stores are selling pleated skirts & plaid wrap scottish skirts with thick ribbed turtlenecks.

A belt wouldn’t work. I bought the smallest size and the shoulders, arms, under the arms and everything else was ridiculously huge.
