when I braid my challah they come out so nice but by the time I take them outta the oven the braids are split. have any ideas how I can keep that from happening?

I am not exactly sure but it sounds to me like once your challah gets into the oven it is rising too fast. You should probably make sure that they are really fully risen before you put them in the oven and try baking on a lower temperature, or maybe not a pre-heated oven so that your loaves continue to grow gradually.

Do you pinch the ends of your challah dough together? That usually helps.

or take the ends and fold then under the challah, so they will bake under the loaf

thanx. I do tuck them under. the problem is on top the braids seperate.

is the dough too dry ... don't use so much flour when shaping them ... just enough not to stick to your hands ...
